The anticipated series, Like a Dragon: Yakuza, appears to adhere closely to the narrative of the original 2005 video game, which depicts a decade-long incarceration for the character Kiryu after he accepts responsibility for the death of his former mentor. This dual timeframe—1995 and 2005—will be present in the Prime Video adaptation, providing a backdrop for Kiryu’s character development over the years.
Ryoma Takeuchi, who plays Kiryu, has shed light on this evolution, stating that the series captures the stark contrasts between the two years. During an interview at San Diego Comic-Con, Takeuchi expressed that the character, originally presented as a reckless youth in 1995, transforms into a composed and mature figure by 2005.
This transformation is not limited to Kiryu's personality; it also impacts his combat style. Takeuchi clarified that significant differences exist between how Kiryu fights in 1995 versus 2005. The actors aimed to depict a pronounced shift, emphasizing the stark distinctions between the two periods.
Fans familiar with the games might expect Kiryu to showcase his signature moves by the finale, but the cast members, who refrained from playing the games to prepare, might not be as aware of those intricacies. Takeuchi commented on this, acknowledging the widespread recognition of the series but clarified that he chose not to engage with the games prior to filming in order to explore the character anew.
The initial three episodes of Like a Dragon: Yakuza are set to debut on Prime Video on October 24, with subsequent episodes releasing weekly, inviting viewers to witness Kiryu's journey across these pivotal years.
